Bringing the Arizona Community together to solutioneer for Arizona's most critical challenges

Premise

How might we embrace the proven methodology of Almedalen Sweden and bring together the most innovative representatives from the trifecta of industry, government and academia to prioritize solutioneering for - and develop community calls to action - that address three pressing issues in Arizona that also align with United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals?

What Is “Almedalen”?

Since 1968, an annual country-wide community gathering called “Almedalsvecken” (Almedalen Week) takes place in Sweden. It’s a central feature of Swedish social and political life, with opportunities for industry, government and academia to weigh in on proposals from all seven major Swedish political parties. With speeches, seminars and other political activities, Almedalsvecken is considered to be the most important forum in Swedish politics.

During the week, representatives from all major political parties, academia and business gather to address Sweden’s most daunting problems, and work together to find solutions. Watch a brief video about Almedalen

Almedalsvecken has inspired similar events to be held in other countries, like Suomi-Areena in Finland, Arendalsuka in Norway, Arvamusfestival in Estonia and Folkemødet in Denmark.

With this process in place, the community is given a sense of hope and agency. It’s no coincidence that Nordic countries continuously top the chart of the world’s happiest people.

We would like to introduce you to a new project: AlmedalenAZ, which seeks to leverage the format and years of experience of Sweden’s Almedalen, and refashion it into a new version to address critical challenges of the state of Arizona, bringing its youth actively into the process. This year, we’ll focus on three Sustainable Development Goals: Zero Hunger (#2), Quality Education (#4), and Clean Water and Sanitation (#6).
